“I am the daughter of two of your residents. My Mom lives on the Belfair Gardens side, while my Dad lives on the Riverside at Belfair side. They have been married for 64 years and their love story is like the movie “the Notebook.” They are inseparable. After my mother’s stroke in February of 2009, she developed vascular dementia. Besides the physical limitations of weakness on her left side, we were now also dealing with her memory loss and confusion. My Dad, now 88, tried desperately to keep her at home and take care of her but it was just too difficult physically, emotionally and financially. It was taking its toll on me as well, as I was the daughter who lived locally and was called upon all hours of the day and night. I have a full time job and a husband with MS myself to take care of. We moved Mom to a facility that was close to where they lived but it was not capable of offering us the care we needed for Mom’s condition or Dad’s need to be near her.
It was when we finally realized that Mom needed more than assisted living but less than skilled nursing that we discovered that Belfair Gardens was being developed. It was right in my backyard literally 2 minutes door to door. In late fall of 2010, we went for a tour and immediately fell in love with the concept, Lara, her staff and the layout of the place, and to make it even more perfect, Lara understood. She understood the need for my parents not to be separated. What made it even more perfect was that Dad could also get an apartment right outside of the double doors leading to Belfair Gardens so he could have access to Mom whenever he needed. We moved them in December of 2010, Mom was Belfair Garden’s first resident. We immediately adopted the staff as part of our own family, they are truly the most caring and compassionate group of individuals and I feel very comfortable leaving my loved ones in their care. They truly listen to any and all concerns we as the family have and do their best to make it right. Like Lara is always saying: ”it is all about the residents and what is best for them.” She has truly made a beautiful, loving environment for them to spend their last days together and we are constantly creating lovely new memories, many laughs and lots of hugs.”

And it is great that residents can be independent but have access to help when you need it. The staff has always been so kind and caring. “We chose Riverside initially for its location and the pleasing appearance. It’s beautiful with lovely furnishings that make one feel comfortable. The residents and staff are very friendly and welcoming. It is comforting to know that my mom will be taken to doctor’s appointments if I am not available. She is served 3 meals a day and she likes to say ‘I don’t have to cook and I don’t have to clean up.’ My mother has interaction with other residents whom she can socialize and play cards. They look out for one another. The activities provided are another asset. It is wonderful to know that my mother is in a safe comfortable environment. I would recommend Riverside at Belfair. The residents are very friendly and anxious to help new residents feel at home. The staff is very helpful, friendly and polite, and ‘bend over backwards’ to make the residents happy in their new home. The beautiful entrance hall and fountain make a lovely ‘welcoming impression.’ The Activity Director has a very interesting series of activities and trips offered (no reason to ever be bored). The staff makes it easy for getting to doctors’ appointments and they also offer many interesting opportunities to take advantage of. Riverside is convenient for my family who lives in Sun City and Bluffton. Riverside is a great place to retire and enjoy our senior years.”
